The municipality of Esbjerg in Denmark has decided to build a 2-kilometre long wall of almost a metre high to protect the centre of the town against the rising sea levels. The decision involves an investment of EUR 6.3 million euro.

Esbjerg plan, agreed in the end of February this year, marks how vulnerable much of Denmark is when the sea levels rise. A country of 400 islands, with recently having had minor floods due to extreme weather. Esbjerg is on the mainland, but even here coastal areas need reinforcement.

Facing the North Sea, Esbjerg is one of the 14 areas marked by the Danish Coastal Authority as particular sensitive for higher sea levels and storm floods. Esbjerg has had high water and floods relatively often, with the worst in 1981 when the level was 4.2 metre higher than normal in a severe storm. | © 2024 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com.
