Finland has started to build a border fence with Russia, to support its border guards. The fence will cover the southernmost 200 kilometres of the 1,000 kilometre long separation line of the two countries.

Cameras are installed every 50 metres. Finland hopes that it will limit “organised plans for large number of people to cross the border”. State-controlled human trafficking – in which large number of immigrants are persuaded or pushed across the border are common practice on the Belarusian-Polish border and between Belarus and Lithuania.

Poland already has built much of its border fence with Belarus, which is to cover all of the more than 400 kilometres of the division line. | © 2023 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com. Featuring press photo: Finnish Border Guards, October 2023
