Swedish truck manufacturer Scania is seeking to buy one of the EV battery factories of the bankrupt Swedish company Northvolt. The site in Västerås is what the truck company wants to have, but not alone.
“We are trying to form a consortium that can co-finance the purchase,” Scania’s CEO Christian Levin told the Financial Times on 11 June 2025. “(The necessary investment; edit.) is simply too much even for a large company like us,” Levin told the Financial Times. According to Swedish broadcasting company SVT, Northvolt has so far invested about EUR 80 million in the Västerås site.
Scania purchased parts of Northvolt already
Scania already has purchased other parts of the bankrupt Northvolt company. On 11 April 2025, Scania announced the acquisition of the Industrial Division of Northvolt Systems, including production capabilities, a research and development centre, and a team of approximately 260 employees. The operations are based in two locations: a leased production facility in Gdańsk, Poland, and an R&D centre in Tomteboda, a Stockholm suburb in Sweden. | © 2025 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com.
