On 18 June 2026, the Swedish Armed Forces announced to quickly introduce a new live-feed and AI incorporating battlefield information system modelled after Ukraine’s Delta system. Before the end of 2026, the first elements should be in place.
The Swedish government has set aside almost EUR 228 million for the new battlefield control and information system, that will use artificial intelligence and Swedish cloud base services, satellite links, encryption and ground based 5G data communications. The plan is to have it fully ready by the end of 2028.
AI for faster decisions on (counter)attacks
The idea behind the system is that live feeds from e.g. drones over the battlefield can quickly be analysed and send to soldiers’ tablets or other handheld devices in the field. AI should make decisions on (counter)attacks faster and more efficiently. The new Swedish system should also make information exchange with the military of other NATO countries easier.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces are using the Delta system for some time now, while NATO countries are still catching up to be ready for highly dynamic battlefields like what Ukraine is facing with the Russian invaders. | © 2026 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com.
