As a reaction to Trump’s frequent political threats to take Greenland, several NATO countries sent a reconnaissance mission to the semi-autonomous Arctic island part of the Kingdom of Denmark.

15 soldiers from France, 13 from Germany, one from the Netherlands and one to three military men or women from Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom. They arrived on board a Royal Danish Air Force C-130J Hercules, together with a non-disclosed number of Danish forces.

More NATO exercises on Greenland

The recon mission lasted only a few days, but is set to clear the way for more in 2026. Future exercises could include guarding installations critical to society, assistance to authorities in Greenland, including the police, receiving allied troops, deploying fighter aircraft in and around Greenland, and naval task solving, according to a statement by the Danish Armed Forces.

Government officials met

Meanwhile, US and Danish government officials also met this week, with the government in Copenhagen stating that there is no movement in the White House stance on taking Greenland. US President Donald Trump has kept a military option on the table as well, while the governments of Greenland, Denmark and many other European countries have spoken against Trump’s wishes for Greenland. | © 2026 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com.
