“President Trump says that the USA will take Greenland. Let me be very clear: the USA will not do that. We belong to nobody. We decide over our own future.”
Greenland’s new Government Leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen waves Trump off, again, on Sunday, 30 March, after the US president repeated over the weekend to NBC news his threat to take the large Arctic island in one way or another, including the possibility of a military option.
NATO territory
Nielsen is back-up by Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, who says to Swedish media: “We cannot accept to have a NATO indicating to annex another NATO ally’s territory in this way. This is unacceptable.”
“Yankee go home”
Greenland is semi-autonomous, but is still part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Last week, US Vice JD Vance made a quick visit to US Space Base Pituffik on Greenland, while both Greenland and Danish politicians made very clear they did not want him there. Despite efforts by Vance’s staff – that included door-to-door visits, no Greenlander even wanted to meet the Americans, apparently. Protesters showed signs with “Yankee Go Home”. | © 2025 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com. Photo: the Greenland icesheet in 2007 (Photo: Hannes Grobe (CC))
