Denmark raises the abortion limit from 12 to 18 weeks. Moreover, children between 15 and 17 are allowed to have an abortion without their parents’ consent. The expansion of abortion rights will come into effect on 1 June 2025.
It is the first time in 50 years the Danes are giving women more freedom in choosing what to do with their unborn child. The move will not necessarily lead to more abortions, Danish advocators say. In Sweden, where abortion rights have been more liberal for decades, most abortions take place until the 12th week.
Norway is on its way to align itself with its neighbours, with the Norwegian government also planning to proposition raising the abortion ceiling from 12 to 18 weeks. | © 2024 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com
