As announced earlier, the Danish mail services PostNord are cancelling letter mail deliveries as of 1 January 2026. That means the about 1,200 typical red mail boxes will be taken off the streets as well.

PostNord Denmark has announced it will be selling most of them, for about EUR 150 to 200 a piece. Some of the boxes have served for years, some of them are almost brand new. An undisclosed number will be auctioned to donate money to organisations that support children in crisis areas. Others can be bought by the public straight away.

Letters as packages

According to PostNord’s own data, the dispatch of letters dropped by 90% since 2000. In 2024 the decrease was 30% compared to 2023. Nowadays, people mainly use e-mail and mobile apps to send messages. Letters can still be sent from 1 January, but as a package for a higher price. | © 2025 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com.
