A Finnish district court has stopped prosecution of the crew of the Eagle S, a ship that reportedly destroyed parts of the Finnish-Estonian Estlink 2 and four internet cables in December 2025, for sabotage. Since the suspected sabotage did take place in international waters, the judge argues that Finnish courts have no jurisdiction.
The judge also argued that the damage done was not enough to charge the captain and two helmsmen for severe sabotage, as the consequences for the Finnish IT infrastructure was not that big, the judge ruled.
Since being indicted, the crew maintained it was a technical error. Experts do not really believe this story. The Eagle S is suspected to be part of Russia’s so-called shadow fleet of merchant ships circumcising the EU sanctions against Moscow. | © 2025 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com.
