Sweden buys an undisclosed number of Piorun shoulder-launched portable air-defence missile systems from Poland, both countries and Polish weapons manufacturer Mesko confirmed on 12 September. The deal, worth about EUR 274 million, was signed at the DSEI international defence trade fair in London on 9 September and concludes 6 months of negotiations, according to a Mesko statement.

It is the second announcement for new air defence systems for the Swedish Armed Forces in a few months time. In June, Sweden announced it would procure the IRIS-T SLM medium-range air defence missile system to protect Gotland, the Swedish island strategically located in the Baltic Sea.

The Piorun has been deployed and/or ordered by Poland, Belgium, Latvia, Slovakia, Lithuania, Georgia, the United States, Ukraine and now Sweden. It has been battle-tested by the Ukrainian armed forces against attacking Russian forces. | © 2025 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com.
