Norway and Canada will intensify their military cooperation in the Arctics, the two countries announced during a press meeting in Ottawa on 21 September. Although further details have not been given.

The move comes after Norway, Germany and Canada chose to purchase the same type of submarines. The countries see this as standardisation and a possibility to increase joint operations as NATO countries. Norway ordered a total of six Class 212CD subs from German Thyssenkrupp, but will likely partly integrate some of its own indigenous weapons systems in it. Germany agreed to purchase four submarines of the type, while Canada with an order of twelve is by far the largest future user.

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said that Canada and Norway are also looking for cooperation between their coast guards, within Arctic research and in mapping vital minerals. | © 2026 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com.
