Swedish Saab AB presented its newest two-seat frontline fighter jet on 2 June 2026: the Gripen F. The fully operational trainer/combat aircraft is initially meant for the Brazilian Air Force, to support the Gripen E single-seat fighters it ordered.
Two-seat operational training aircraft have the same capabilities as the single-seat versions, but can be key in training pilots as an instructor can sit in the back. Most current 5th generation stealthy fighters have no two-seat versions, but the Saab Gripen has.
Gripen F orders
The 2014 contract with the Brazilian government covers the development and production of 36 fighter aircraft: 28 Gripen E and eight Gripen F. Deliveries began in 2020 and to date 11 aircraft have been handed over. Saab has also received Gripen F orders from Thailand and Colombia. So far, the Swedish Air Force has ordered 60 Gripen E single-seaters only, but it still has the older Gripen D on strength and apparently the transfer from the C/D version to the E version is easy enough. | © 2026 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com.
