Swedish furniture and indoor design store chain Ikea will close down one of its big stores in Sweden, for the first time in 40 years.

The company announced that Ikea Borlänge, in the southwest of the country, will no longer continue in its current form as of 2027. Instead, a smaller shop will be opened in the iconic Kupolen shopping centre.

“More than 20 percent of our sales are now done online, and many customers begin their shopping experience digitally”, the company writes in a press release on 5 May. “Even if Ikea Borlänge is one of our newer stores in Sweden, we have learned a lot since this location opened in 2013.” | © 2026 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com.
