Rzeczywistość by Jacek Malczewski, 1908

A painting of people made in 1908 by Polish painter Jacek Malczewski has become Poland’s most expensive work of art. It was auctioned in Poland in mid-June for EUR 5.2 million.

“Rzeczywistość” (Reality in English) is an oil painting on canvas. It has been in private hands for a very long time and has not been exhibited publicly since 1926 in then Polish Lwów, now Lviv in Ukraine.

The most expensive Polish art sold abroad is the portrait of Marjorie Ferry by Tamara Łempicka, sold for about EUR 19.2 million at Christie’s in London in 2020. | © 2020 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com. Featured image of Rzeczywistość (public domain)
