Apart from the United States, the Scandinavian countries spent most on defence per capita of all NATO members in 2024, according to a summary made by Dutch public broadcasting company NOS.

Norway is the second-biggest spender (EUR 1,765 per capita) after the US (2,641 per capita), followed by Denmark (EUR 1,540), Finland (EUR 1,205) and Sweden (EUR 1,176). The sixth nation in the top is the United Kingdom (EUR 1,105). Germany (EUR 1,081) and Luxembourg (EUR 1,079) are the only two other countries spending more than a thousand euro per inhabitant. Poland spends EUR 888 per person.

NATO Summit to get expenditure to 5%

At the bottom of the overview are Turkey (EUR 246), Montenegro (EUR 240), North Macedonia (EUR 146) and Albania (EUR 173). At the NATO Summit, coming days in The Hague, the Netherlands, almost all NATO countries are expected to beef up their military expenditure from sometimes as low as a little more than 1 percent to 5 percent of the nation’s income (GDP). | © 2025 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com.
