Russia is upgrading its nuclear bases near Scandinavia and Poland, media in a.o. Sweden report. According to a recent story by Swedish national broadcasting company SVT and Polish media, it concerns at least four different locations.
The bases of Asipovitjy in Belarus, a nuclear base in Kaliningrad, a base on Nova Zembla and military facilities on the Kola peninsula are being improved with new buildings, more fences, new communication equipment and other updates, the media report based on observations from satellite photos.
100 tactical nuclear weapons near Poland
According to Polish sources, the Kaliningrad base accommodates up to 100 tactical nuclear weapons. The Kola peninsula sees upgrades on 50 storage bunkers for nuclear-capable missiles on submarines, sources say.
Upgrades near the Finnish border
Apart from upgrades to nuclear facilities, Finland has spotted a light build-up and improvements of other bases relatively near its border. These include additional combat and air assault helicopters in Severomorsk-2, 180 kilometres (111 miles) from the Finnish border, or 110 kilometres (68 miles) from the Norwegian one. In Petrozavodsk, 175 kilometres (109 miles) from the Finnish border, new storage facilities have been spotted that could accommodate up to 150 armoured vehicles.
