How to fly and use a drone will be part of the compulsory national defence education at high schools in Estonia. This is the result of an agreement between that the government parties reached on 26 May 2026.
Flying drones of all different kinds have made a big breakthrough in the war that Russia has waged on Ukraine especially since the large scale invasion by Putin’s army in February 2022. Both sides are now using hundreds of drones every single day: to observe enemy positions, to attack enemy positions, and to verify damages done. Boat drones have been used successfully by Ukraine to cripple Russian navy ships, while land drones have been providing supplies to frontline troops.
Each Estonian high school will get their own drones
Any next conflict elsewhere in the world will likely see the deployment of ever more sophisticated drones. According to the Estonian government, using drone technology will be essential. Each school will get their own drones.
The national defence education has been obligatory at Estonian high schools since 2023, and is meant to create deeper knowledge of the armed forces and of the defence of the country in dark hours. | © 2025 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com. Featured image AI generated, created with Adobe Firefly
