Leader of the populistic Dawn of Nemunas (Nemuno Aušra) political party in Lithuania, and Member of Parliament, Remigijus Žemaitaitis has been denied access to classified state information, Lithuanian media reported on 24 April 2025.

Such information access is normally granted, so that the parliament can check whether the government is doing its job right. But the Lithuanian State Security Department (VSD) has ruled against it, and this has been taken over by the Speaker of the House – which is normally a formality after such ruling.

Žemaitaitis has been convicted of hate speech by the Lithuanian Constitutional Court, including for saying Jews were responsible for Soviet repression against Lithuanians, and was subsequently impeached in 2024. After his forceful departure he was re-elected as MP in October. | © 2025 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com. Featured image of the Lithuanian Parliament by Augustas Didžgalvis (CC)
