The fire brigades of Finland are gearing up for war. Bullet-proof vests and military grade helmets and new working procedures should make them ready in case the country gets attacked, similarly as their Ukrainian colleagues are targeted by Russia.

According to a report by Finnish national broadcasting company Yle, personnel of the Helsinki rescue services have visited Ukraine to learn how it is to operate under threat of an enemy army.

Russia targets rescue workers

The war in Ukraine has shown that Russia is continuously targeting rescue workers. For example, when fire-fighting crews respond to a missile strike, the Russians send additional missiles or drones to the same location once the rescue workers have arrived on site.
