Estonia is preparing law changes to allow its citizens to own and use more weapons than before. Reason is the increased threat of a Russian invasion in the near future.
“The current Weapons Act was written in an entirely different time, and under very different circumstances,” Estonian Interior Minister Igor Taro said on Estonian Radio (ERR) on Thursday 17 April 2025. He adds that a broader ownership of weapons comes with the obligation to fulfill a security role in an event of crisis or war.
The expected law change proposition is first of all meant for volunteers of the Estonian Defence League and police assistants. Many of them already know how to use weapons, yet are not entitled to have or use them when not on duty. | © 2025 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com. Featured photo: Docmonstereyes (CC)
