“Enough is enough!” With this key message, hundreds of Greenlanders protested against the US president Trump’s ambitions to take Greenland as US territory on Saturday 15 March 2025. The biggest protest took place in the capital of Nuuk, and is according to local media a rare show.

The civil protests on Greenland follow a statement of all political party leaders on Friday 14 March. “We – all party leaders – cannot accept the repeated statements about annexation and control over Greenland. We as party leaders find this behaviour unacceptable towards friends and allies in a defence alliance,” the statement reads – with reference to NATO, the military cooperation that also Greenland is part of. The joint statement by all party leaders follows the elections on Tuesday 11 March, which was a big win for the Democratic Party.

Greenland is a semi-autonomous part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but a majority of the Greenlanders is in favour for future full independency of their island nation. | © 2025 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com. Photo of the Greenland flag by Eider Palmou (CC)
