Norway has won the court case brought by the World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF) against the state. On 13 February, the Oslo District Court has given the green light for drilling trials for minerals in the deep waters of the Norwegian Sea and the Greenland Sea.
The WWF accused the Norwegian Ministry of Energy of insufficient mapping of the seabed, and therefore giving the Norwegian parliament improper data for approving the offshore exploration of minerals in the seas mentioned. Other experts, including the Norwegian Environment Agency, also expressed their doubts about the lack of knowledge and therefore the unknown consequences of drilling trials.
WWF considers appealing sea drilling judgement
However, the judge ruled the ruled that the Norwegian government and parliament had enough information to base their decision for offshore exploration of minerals on. The WWF is considering appealing the verdict, as can be read in its statement at WWF.no. | © 2025 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com.
