Russia has switched gear in its GPS jamming in Norway. Especially spoofing is now more often used, according to a report of the Norwegian broadcasting agency NRK.

From about 1,400 metres up in the air, aeroplanes are deliberately being fed wrong information by the Russian electronic warfare units across the border of Northern Norway. At ground level, the jamming does not take place. Up in the air, GPS systems that are spoofed show a different location than where the plane really is – possibly confusing pilots.

Russian jamming has become common

Before the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, interference of communication systems was only noticed when Russia held military exercises. But the jamming is now a common thing of every day, not only in Norway, but in all countries bordering to Russia or Belarus.

Airliner aborting landing in Lithuania

Aviation authorities in all the Nordic and Baltic states report regular interference, with a Ryanair Boeing 737 coming in from London aborting landing at Vilnius International Airport in Lithuania as late as 17 January this year due to jamming of its GPS signals by the Russian military. | © 2025 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com (text and photo)
