In about one month, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania cut themselves off from the Russian power grid, called BRELL. On February 8, the Baltic electricity operators will leave the Russian power supply, and join the European on the 9th, a year earlier than planned, according to Latvian broadcasting company LSM.

Each country has spent several hundreds of millions of euros to make the transfer possible. The European Union has contributed another EUR 300 million to support the change, which makes the Baltic states no longer depended on Russia for its electricity.

Independency from Russia

The whole process has taken 15 years, but the need for independency from Russia was quite clear when Moscow ordered its troops to execute a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022. The three Baltic states already stopped all or most of their electricity trade with Russia since the full Russian aggression in Ukraine. | © 2025 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com.
