Four Polish shoulders have been charged of negligence of duty after they failed to offload 240 anti-tank mines from a train near the city of Szczecin, in the north of the country. The mines travelled on for 10 days – without any security – to an IKEA location in Orla, in the far east of the country, only 18 kilometres (11 miles) from the border with Belarus.
The incident happened in mid-July last year, but only now has made the news. According to the Polish Press Agency (PPA), IKEA immediately informed the military and the mines were picked up by the military police the same day.
Theoretically, the four soldiers could be sentenced to up to five years in jail. Apart from them, Major General Kępczyński has been fired as head of the Armed Forces Support Inspectorate. According to the military command, he knew about the incident but kept it quiet. | © 2025 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com
