The man who has repeatedly put the Quran on fire in Sweden, Iraqi born Salwan Momika, has been shot and killed on Wednesday 29 January 2025 shortly after 23:00 on the balcony of his apartment in Södertälje, a city south of Stockholm. Swedish Police confirmed the killing of Momika, which happened why he was broadcasting live on TikTok, on Thursday.

Police officers were relatively quick in arresting five suspects in the killing, all man in the age of 20 to 60 years old. Four of them were taken from an apartment neighbouring or near Momika’s flat, the fifth was seen driving away in a car after the shooting in the Hovjö area of the city. According to details shared by the public prosecutor, all live in the same city and only one of the suspects has been convicted earlier, for a minor offence.

Authorities have yet to name possible motives for the killing of the man that became known for his Quran burnings. It is not even clear if the murder is linked to these. Already in 2023, Momika was ordered to leave the country, but apparently he never did nor was forced to.

Shooting at Lund Central Station

Although the number of shootings in Sweden has reduced over the past two years time, high visibile incidents still take place regularly. Tuesday 28 January a 30-year-old known criminal was shot and killed on Lund Central Station in the south, in front of many people. For this killing police officers arrested a 17-year-old at one of the staircases to the platforms of the railway station in Lund, directly after the shooting. | © 2025 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com (text and photo)
