The train companies of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have made it easier to travel to the capitals of the three Baltic states by train. Launch on 6 January, it is now possible to make the entire stretch in 10 hours, including two transfers.
Travellers willing to make the whole journey by rail can hop on the train a bit before 10:25 in the Estonian capital of Tallinn, or at 07:05 in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius. The end destination is schedule at 21:00 (Vilnius) or 17:35 (Tallinn).
Unified ticket system on its way
Travellers will have to transfer in the Latvian capital of Riga and in Valga on the Estonian-Latvian border. Tartu, in the second city of Estonia, is also included in the schedule. At the moment, operators LTG Link, Vivi, and Elron still let passengers pay tickets in their respective countries, but the three companies are working on a unified ticket system.
Promising but car is faster
Before 6 January, the train companies did not match their schedules for passengers to make an easy transfer, resulting in a trip of more than 24 hours. Although the new connection sounds promising, those who chose the car are still faster to get from Tallinn to Vilnius. Motorists are able to make it in about 8 to 8.5 hours, including two 30-minute stops. | © 2025 Marcel Burger, nordicreporter.com.
